I Thought You Were Here (day 2816)

I thought you were here,
Then my summer began.
I took you on every trip.
Turned down by the big creek,
Headed on in deep;
Dirt and the sand
And everything ran.

I thought you were here,
Ready to join in.
I cut out a path
To the big ol’ pine,
We hid in the rain
Out of everyone’s pain.

I thought you were here,
Always at my front door.
I heard you come up,
Saw the look in your eyes,
Never thought I’d lose
Deep sand and my blues
Ended with everything for you.

Decorate My Lapel (day 1016)

If we don’t lose it all
Then how much do we lose?

Knot worn and grumpy,
En-sensed long and tall,
A scapular in my heart,
A devil to my breath.

Where wicked thoughts laughter
Knees into our death;
My agony shelters fluttered beats
From wisdom setting free.

Decorate my lapel
Like honey in my hair,
18 mistakes I’ve made;
Black beckons fate.

Letters smudging fade,
Discourse setting deep,
Concubine’s white cotton leather
And my divine.

Try Again (day 738)

You cannot win every day you try
You cannot lose every day either
You cannot fly among the birds
Without walking among the worms

You cannot begin to know it all
You cannot learn without advice
You cannot grow without a breath
Of inward, deep, and conscious thought

You cannot smell the flowers in winter
You cannot speed the times of seasons
You cannot walk amongst the trees
Without a path to lead you forth

You cannot love without a love
You cannot hope without a dream
You cannot be without a seat
You cannot cry without a smile

But in the end it pulls us in
We wrap around and believe within
A lasting hug, some tea to share
You and me as we try again
